The layout is provided through an HTML like format where the diagram is included in the text at a specific point. The size of the diagram and the justification of the diagram within the text are both controllable by the document format. Instructions that are available in typical print format which allow more complex control such as images being able to float to the top or bottom of a page as near as possible to a specific paragraph are not available in e-book formats. Instead the image exists at the point where it is included regardless of the layout on the page.

In creating a document file for a specific device you can use your knowledge of the font sizes to position the images where they are likely to have an optimal layout. In the case of the iPad the user is able to modify the font size resulting in a variety of layouts. The document format has to be created for the default font resulting in a certain amount of uncontrolled variation in the actually layout delivered to the reader as in the first four examples with different user selected fonts below:
